Allison Toepperwein-Eury
In April 2010, Allison (Allie) Toepperwein experienced a tremor in her left hand while living in Austin, Texas and giving birth to her daughter. However, it wasn’t until New Year’s Eve of 2014 and 2 1/2 months after Allison's divorce before she was diagnosed with Young Onset Parkinson's Disease (YOPD.)
Allison went on to make history by becoming the first person with Parkinson's to compete on the popular TV show American Ninja Warrior. She began blogging, delivering motivational speeches, and advocating for single moms, women, and young adults with diseases. In May 2020, after six years of frustrating dating experiences, Allison decided to surrender her search for a soulmate and entrusted her soul and future partner to God.
Just four days later, Steven Eury, who had recently gone through a divorce and also had YOPD, purchased property on a street named Allison in Stanly County, North Carolina.
In August 2020, one of Steven's friends sent him a blog post written by Allison, sharing her experiences of "Dating With Parkinson's." Steven felt an inexplicable connection and decided to reach out to her. Two months later, in October 2020, the two finally met. Two years later the couple were married. They now reside on the very street named Allison.
In December of 2023, the couple crossed over with a new connection, by both under going brain surgery to ease their symptoms of Parkinson’s. The procedure they both endured on the same day, with the same surgeon, in the same hospital and operating room just an hour apart is called Deep Brain Stimulation or DBS surgery.
Their unique journey has brought them closer together, and they proudly embrace the hashtag #InLoveWithParkinsons.
Steven Eury
December of 2010 was the first time that Steven Eury noticed a tremor in his right hand. He had just witnessed the birth of his second child. Slowly but surely the tremor turned into a constant battle along with him noticing that his right arm didn’t swing much when he walked. His speech became progressively lower in volume. This young man, father of two kids under 4 years old, was quickly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at just 30 years old.
Divorce after 18 years of marriage, starting a new career and building a new home for himself and two kids, now 8 and 11 took it’s toll on him. However, in 2020 by divine intervention, he met a Texas girl that also has Parkinson’s disease, Allison.
Never one to play the victim, she spurred him into participating in a team of 12 runners, all with Parkinson’s, running a 200 mile relay race through the Blue Ridge Mountains, one month before their wedding. 😲
As if that wasn’t enough; his go-getter, grab-life-by-the-horns wife, thought it would be so awesome if they could both have deep brain stimulation surgery together! Why not? Same day, same procedure, same operating room, same surgeon… you get the picture.
He thanks God for the relief that this surgery has provided him. He thanks God through his son Jesus for his secure future. Wanting to give back to help, “…the least of these” is a no brainer! (No pun intended)
Steven can’t help but smile when he thinks about the love that The Butterfly House provides our community.
